Album One
11. The People of the King (3:26)*
A fantasy song about a medieval insurrection deposing the king and having a party!
We tried to make this sound like a raucous celebration.
I've got a recording of a live version made in Manchester in 1976 or thereabouts.

THE PEOPLE OF THE KING
With the love you brought, and the love you caught
And the love you said you’d bring
So we played to smiling faces of the People of the King
I sat in the minstrel’s gallery a maid upon my knee
As we celebrate the passing of his Regal Majesty
And I took her to a chamber a good time was had by all
As we hung his Regal Majesty on ropes above the hall.
With the love…..
Oh we laughed and sang and danced and shagged
Into another morn
And the people drank the barrels dry
Till they could drink no more
And the freedom of the masses it was plain for all to see
Since we’d cut his Regal Majesty roughly into three.
With the love…..
All the servants sat at tables high above the milling throng
And the soldiers brought them bread and wine
And hunks of venison
As they raised their glasses to the sky
Democracy was saved
As we dumped his Regal Majesty into a shallow grave.
With the love…..
Oh, oh, listen to this little tale of freedom that I sing
For it happened very long ago to a now forgotten king
And the people of the country were so happy to be free
That they built a road upon the grave of his Regal Majesty.
With the love……….
