SIMON THE SANTA
Simon the Santa fixes his beard.
He looks in the mirror: it’s lovely to be
Clean and warm and happy.
Simon the Santa goes into the store.
He listens to children who always want more.
Their smiling eyes are happy.
Simon the Santa knows his job is good.
It earns him the money to help him buy food:
And the people he meets are happy.
Simon the Santa goes home that night
To a charity shelter with only one light.
But as he falls asleep he is happy.
Not long ago Simon had his own home.
He was standing in line with a child of his own.
Funny how what you have built can collapse - so quickly.
Simon the Santa remembers back when
He grew his own plants in a little garden
And when he felt so happy.
Simon the Santa still hopes for a home.
He’s waiting for some nice person to phone
And tell him he can be happy.
Simon the Santa wants to be proud and say that he made it back all on his own.
Though he knows that he needs the help – of angels.
Simon the Santa now faces the world
Secure with himself and secure in his work.
Simon the Santa is happy.
