Album One

10.  Attending Ambition (2:48)*

I went to a restaurant in Cornwall with a mate in 1974 and was served by a lovely girl. She was very pretty. I think this is my only song written about a waitress.

10. Attending Ambition

ATTENDING AMBITION

Soft lighted room, candlelit gloom:

serving away the night while we tarried

Beautiful smile and a prettier face:

Catching my words with a far swifter parry

And we are here eating away our use of the day

While she is near I’m wondering if she is looking my way

I cannot say.

Delicate taste; sloth ridden haste

No more can I claim a simple style living

Watch as we smile, come to our side:

Thank you for all that you have been doing

And she explains, telling us how she came to be here.

Accents so clear: so soft and so gentle given to her.

Please let me hear.

And as we go I hope you will know,

know of the evening that once lay before us

Smile as we leave, forever believe

Our custom was only for reasons of business

And maybe some day I will return to see you again

Until that time I will go on still one step, behind.

Wouldn’t you mind?
